I am often asked "So … why Dot 3rd Eye?"

Back in 2005 when I first toyed with the idea of incorporating my nascent consulting practice, I was faced with the daunting task of coming up with a name that would capture the essence of what I had to offer. I had to be careful not to pick a name that would pigeonhole me as an "optimization expert" or an “OR guru” because it was my intent to be seen more as a problem-solver rather than the purveyor of specific technical expertise. It was my intent to provide innovative solutions to hard decision problems by bringing insight and intelligence (in addition to the tool-kit) that my training and experience had provided me.

The choice of "3rd eye" seemed particularly appropriate:

  • In Hindu belief, the third eye represents the eye of insight and wisdom. It is also associated with intuition, imagination, visualization, concentration, all characteristics that are keys to my approach to problem-solving.
  • For those who prefer a more secular interpretation, I offer this: when you've looked long enough at a problem with your own two eyes and have made no progress, whom do you call? The third eye!
  • It is also an inadvertent tribute to my decade at i2: it is the answer to the question: "what comes after eye-two?"
